With the new school year just around the corner, it’s a great time to start thinking about organizing your kids’ homework supplies. If you’re like me, keeping track of homework assignments, art supplies, and school supplies can be a bit chaotic. But don’t worry, I’ve got the perfect solution for you—a rolling homework cart! This mobile homework station is a game-changer for managing your kids’ school routine and making homework time a breeze. Plus, all the supplies you need are available at Michaels. The one I did for my third grader is below. Next, I’ll do one for my eighth grader.
Gather Your Homework Cart Supplies
Let’s make sure you have everything you need. Everything I used is linked below, plus I’ve included a list of supplies you may want to grab.
- Rolling cart
- Bin organizers
- Vinyl/Stickers (for decorating)
- Pencil cups or a caddy
- Folders
- Loose leaf paper
- Highlighters
- Pens
- Pencils
- Construction paper
- Letter board
- Art supplies (like markers, crayons, glue sticks, glue, and scissors)
- Office supplies (like sticky notes, stapler, double-sided tape and paper clips)
Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Homework Cart
1. Choose Your Cart: The first step is to pick out a rolling cart. Michaels has a variety of options that are perfect and in different colors. A cart with multiple tiers is ideal because it provides a lot of room for all your supplies. Plus you can grab a cart topper if you want to cover the first tier. Opt to add a handle for easy moving.
2. Decorate it: There are so many ways you can decorate a homework cart. If you have a Cricut and a printer, grab some printable vinyl and decorate the cart with stickers or personalize it with their name. If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can grab stickers, letters, glitter and more from Michaels. The drip sticker design I used was perfect. I ended up purchasing two packs and used 1 1/2 because each pack comes with 2 strips.
3. Organize with Bin Organizers: Bin organizers and trays are a great idea to keep smaller items like glue sticks, paper clips, and important papers in check. I just used one of their cheaper trays, but you could also grab this clear acrylic caddy (pick up two to fill one tier) or this 3 compartment acrylic tray (pick up two to fill one tier) that fit the cart perfectly and are super nice and sturdy.
4. Set Up Pencil Cups: Pencil cups are essential for holding pencils, markers, and other writing tools. Position these on the top tier or use adhesive hooks to hang them from the sides of the cart.
5. Add a Letter Board: A letter board is a fun and functional addition. Use it to display due dates, sight words for younger children, or motivational quotes. Attach it to the front or side of the cart for a personalized touch.
6. Store Art and Office Supplies: Dedicate a tier for art supplies and office supplies. This makes it easy for your kids to find what they need and encourages them to keep their own homework station organized.
7. Make Room for Homework Assignments: Designate a space on the cart for current homework assignments. This can be a folder or clipped to the side. It’s a great place for kids to keep their work in sight and stay on top of their due dates.
8. Find the Perfect Spot: Once your homework cart is all set up, find a great place for it in your home. The kid’s bedroom, office, family room, or a corner in the kitchen can be ideal locations. The key is to keep it in a spot where it’s easily accessible but not in the way.
